Jobs are a part of our lives, and for most of us, there’s no option to simply stop working. But beyond just earning a paycheck, we all have to ask ourselves: Is my job making my life better? Is it contributing to my overall happiness and sense of purpose?
The questions you need to ask yourself about your current job or the one you're considering. |
These questions may sound simple, but they are essential to finding fulfillment in what you do. After all, if you’re going to spend a significant portion of your life working, it’s worth ensuring that it adds value beyond just paying the bills. Whether you're considering a new position or reflecting on your current one, it’s important to take stock of what your job is offering you.
Questions to Ask about Your Job
Here are a few key questions to ask yourself:
1. Am I making a contribution?
You don’t need to be curing cancer or solving the climate crisis, but does your work, in some way, make the world a better place? Even in a small way? If you work in a factory, for example, are you helping to create products that people need? If you're in customer service, are you providing solutions that make someone's day easier? Making a contribution, even if it feels modest, can give your work more meaning.
2. Am I learning something?
A job that challenges you is more than just a source of income—it’s a source of growth. Are you learning new skills? Developing yourself professionally and personally? Even if you’re not in your dream job, a role that allows you to expand your abilities makes you more valuable, not only to your employer but to yourself. Learning keeps you sharp and engaged with the world.
3. Am I having fun?
Now, we don’t usually think of work as fun, but shouldn't it be, at least to some extent? If you're doing something you enjoy, whether it’s the tasks themselves or the camaraderie with your team, work can and should feel rewarding. It’s about more than just getting through the day. Being able to come home and say, “Yeah, it was a pretty good day” more often than not is a sign that your job is bringing you satisfaction.
Even if you only check off one of these questions with a "yes," it might be enough to make your job worthwhile. It's all about balance and ensuring that your work adds something positive to your life. Remember, work is a part of life, but it doesn’t have to define your happiness.
